Verdict
The Benelli MR1 is Benelli's 2010 entry into the centrefire-rifle market — a departure for the company best known for its shotgun line. Auto Regulating Gas Operating System (ARGO), the self-cleaning gas mechanism Benelli applies across its shotguns, scaled into a 5.56 NATO carbine for the Italian and export sport markets. The MR1 reached Canadian shooters at the $2,000–$2,700 price tier as the Italian-engineered alternative to the FN SCAR 16S, the IWI Tavor TAR21, and the Bushmaster ACR — flagship-tier semi-auto centrefires from different national engineering traditions. SOR/2024-248 named the MR1 on December 5, 2024 alongside Benelli's other prohibited entries (the entire Beretta-Benelli group's civilian centrefire catalogue went in one OIC). Italian premium-tier sport-rifle presence in the Canadian market was substantially removed by the December 2024 expansion.
