Verdict
The Marlin 336 is the deer rifle Canadian hunters have been carrying for three generations. Continuously produced from 1948 through Marlin's bankruptcy in 2020, then re-launched by Ruger in 2021 after the brand acquisition: the platform has spent most of its existence at the centre of Canadian hunting tradition. .30-30 Winchester is the working calibre — a cartridge that has not meaningfully changed since 1894 and that Marlin's tubular magazine handles flat-nosed without compromise. The Index reads the 336 at 2/15: one point for lever-action class, one point for common centrefire hunting calibre, zeros across the rest. The rifle is on the Index because the lever-action category needs a centrefire reference case alongside the Henry Long Ranger (Batch 4, score 2/15). Two lever-actions, two identical scores, two different ends of the production-era spectrum — Marlin's 1948 design and Henry's 2016 design land in the same Low band.
