Verdict
The HK SL8 was engineered specifically to be a sporting rifle: thumbhole stock instead of a pistol grip, fixed magazine instead of detachable, the same G36 short-stroke gas system but in a target-shooter package. Heckler & Koch built it to clear the German civilian-firearms law of the late 1990s without compromising the underlying mechanism's accuracy. Canadian sport shooters bought it for the same reason — a precision .223 with HK build quality and the kind of trigger you wanted for prone work. SOR/2024-248 named it in December 2024 alongside the G36 line itself, the USC carbine, and the rest of the HK civilian catalogue. The SL8 is the case study for how the SOR criteria reach by lineage rather than by feature set: the rifle was designed to clear feature-based laws, and the lineage clause caught it anyway.
