The Norinco Type 81 is the People's Liberation Army's standard service rifle adopted in 1981, manufactured by Norinco for both Chinese military service and the international export market. The civilian semi-automatic Type 81 SA reached the Canadian market in the early 2010s and developed a substantial Canadian following — affordable AK-adjacent ergonomics at the $599–$1,199 CAD price tier, often positioned as a more refined alternative to the simpler SKS. SOR/2020-96 named the Type 81 family on May 1, 2020 alongside the AK family pattern itself. The entry sits with the SKS (pilot, currently Non-restricted but rubric-High), the AK-pattern collective (Batch 6), and the Norinco Type 97A (Batch 4) as the cluster of Chinese semi-auto centrefire platforms named in the 2020 OIC.
