Verdict
FAMAE is Chile's state-owned military manufacturer that produced the Swiss SIG SG 540 family of rifles under license from SIG Sauer starting in 1980 for the Chilean Armed Forces and the South American export market. The SG 540 / SG 542 / SG 543 variants are the production predecessors to the more modern SIG SG 550 family (Batch 10) — the SG 540 was the rifle SIG built before the Stgw 90 program produced the SG 550. Canadian commercial imports of the FAMAE variants occurred through small specialty channels through the 1990s and 2000s — a niche South American service-rifle collector segment. SOR/2024-248 named the entire FAMAE-produced SIG SG 540 family on December 5, 2024 — eight named platforms across the SG 540 / SG 542 / SG 543 and SAF / MINI SAF sub-variants.
