Verdict
The SIG MCX and SIG MPX are SIG Sauer's modular civilian semi-automatic platforms, released to the U.S. civilian market in 2014 and Canadian Non-restricted classification in 2016–2017. The MCX is a 5.56 NATO short-stroke gas-piston rifle with a quick-change barrel system; the MPX is a 9mm closed-bolt blowback PCC built on the same lower receiver. Together they were SIG's bid for the modular-civilian-rifle market the AR-15 had defined, and the modularity was the design point — caliber conversions in minutes, the same controls and ergonomics across both platforms, the same Sig fit-and-finish. SOR/2024-248 named both on December 5, 2024 as a single family in the regulatory naming. The entry argues editorially that the OIC pathway recognizes platform-modularity as a category — the MCX and MPX were named not as two separate rifles but as one design system.
