The SG 551 carbine and SG 553 short-carbine variants are the same family in shorter configurations. The 550 family reached the Canadian market through the 1990s and 2000s at the $5,000–$9,000 CAD premium tier — among the highest-end military-derived sport rifles available, with the translucent polymer magazines and the folding stock that defined the platform's visual identity. SOR/2020-96 named the SG 550 family on May 1, 2020 as one of the original-9 prohibited families. The FAMAE-licensed Chilean variants of the same platform (SG 540, SG 542, SG 543) were named separately in SOR/2024-248 — the Index's collective entry under "FAMAE SIG variants" in the December 2024 list captures those sub-variants.
